Chapter 9 Beloved

June 19th, 2009

The disciples must have thought Jesus was crazy.
Seriously. I can only imagine their faces.
So confused, so perplexed, uncomfortably glancing back and forth between each other,
wondering if they had misheard, wondering if someone could help them understand.
Meanwhile, you got Jesus, unnerved, unfazed, just sitting there cooly,
looking them dead in the eyes, asking them to marry Him.
Yes, you heard me right…marry Him.
With nothing more than a cup of wine, no less,
the Lamb of God was proposing. So you can imagine their confusion right?
“Wait. What? Come again? Jesus, you feeling alright brotha?
I mean, I don’t think that I’m exactly what you’re looking for!
You want to think about what you’re saying for a minute?”

Of course, we don’t see it that way, because we’re not Jewish.
But they were, and they did. See it that way, I mean.
“Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
We hear these words and we think Communion, Eucharist, Last Supper.
The disciples heard this and they’re thinking wedding bells.

Apparently,

“In those days,” when a Hebrew man decided to take for Himself a Hebrew woman,
he’d go to his father and say, “Her, Dad. I want to make little rabbis with her.”
So then the dad would go to her dad and they’d talk camels, or sheep,
or whatever the payment was going to be, and after they’d settled on a figure,
the groom would call in all his friends and family, set a table in the middle of a room,
set the aforementioned girl down in front of said table,
break out a cup, fill it with wine, and set it in front of her saying,
“This is my covenant with you, take and drink it.”
And if she did, that was her answer. With a simple gulp and swig,
she was saying, “I do,” and that was it. No rings, no fancy songs or dinners,
just a cup and an invitation.
And oh yeah, all their relatives sitting in the room watching.
I mean, talk about pressure. But yeah, that was it.
Her lips to the glass was the same as saying,
“I accept your life, and I give you mine in return.”

Now, If the girl said yes, “in those days,” she would then go immediately back to her home,
where she would be known as, “one who was bought with a price.”
It’s true. That was her name. Kind of long and tedious, and extremely hard to shout out in
a game of soccer, but that was it. And with her new identity, she would go back to her town,
and start preparing for the wedding. And really, she’d just start waiting
for future husband to finish what he had to do and come and get her.
What was he doing? Well, during the engagement, the groom’s primary responsibility was
to build a mansion for him and his bride to be.

Now girls, before you get too excited, let me explain. “Mansion” in Hebrew means, “apartment.”
And what’s even better is that this apartment was actually more like an addition,
because the groom would build it onto his parents pre-existing house.
Yes. You heard me correctly. Their first home would be with the in-laws.
And right now, I can just imagine how many girls are thinking,
“oh please don’t let me marry a Jewish boy.”
It’s true though. He would build his “mansion” onto the family “insula,”
which is what they would call the family dwelling.
You see, the entire family would just keep building on and building on
until you had what was basically a city block, all comprised of one big bustling Jewish family.
(And you thought My Big Fat Greek Wedding was bad) Crazy, but also true.

Well, as you can imagine, this process could take quite a while.
I mean, it’s a house for crying out loud.
Some scholars say it was six months, or even a year before the poor guy was finished.
And get this, the only one who could decide if it was finished was the father.
So he’d be working and working and working, and every day looking to his dad,
saying, “Are we done yet?” And I can just imagine the father messing with him.
Taking his time, looking it over, and then just saying, “Almost.”
Could you imagine? Oh, the agony!
And to top it all off, the groom and the bride weren’t even allowed to talk to each other.
Nothing. Nada. Zip.
They couldn’t see or speak to one another during the entire engagement, except for one outlet.
The best man. He’d be the instant messenger if you will. Taking notes back and forth between
the doting couple. And those moments were probably pretty funny.
“Here’s your note, ‘one who was bought with a price.’ Check yes, no, or maybe.”
Unbelievable.

But you know, how much more beautiful would that day be when the father finally approved?
That day when the groom was finally finished, and he could gather up his homeboys,
or ‘groomsmen’ as we westerners would say, and imperiously march into his fiance’s town?
Oh it was sweet.
And that’s just what he’d do. He’d get his bridal party together and they’d come to her house,
and without any prior announcement or advanced warning, they would blow a shofar,
which was a ram’s horn that served as a trumpet,
and upon hearing it, the pining bride would come bustling out her front door and practically
straight down the aisle, and into her beloved’s arms.
The period of waiting and wanting would be over,
and the two would be united at last to consummate their long-awaited union.
Joy. Happiness. Little Rabbis… You know, all the good stuff.

So then,
Back to the dinner table with the 12. Can you sense where this is going?
Jesus breaks into this marriage proposal,
cup out, wine-filled, offering his covenant with them. They accept.
“I do” to Jesus. Gulp, gulp. “I accept your life, and I give you mine in return.”
So then, what does Jesus do? He explains how they have to spend some time apart.
Naturally. Only this is going to be longer than a year. However, the best man was coming.
His name? The Holy Spirit. So when Jesus leaves,
off to get busy preparing a “mansion” for them, (”in my Father’s house there are many rooms”)
He doesn’t leave them alone, but instead sends His own mediator, the Holy Spirit,
to keep the messages going between Himself and his Beloved.
Meanwhile, the bride is left behind in her town, keeping watch, day and night,
not knowing the day, time or hour that the bridegroom will appear.
Until finally, after a long-awaited return, and we’re talking seriously,
long awaited; centuries and milleniums waited people,
after this much awaited consummation,
the Father alone will announce that the time has come,
and Jesus will be coming back for all His faithful, all who are His bride.
With a posse of angels and loud trumpet call of their own, He will take us home,
to the marriage supper of the Lamb!
And we will share in ever-increasing joy and intimacy with Him forever and ever.
As C.S. Lewis so brilliantly articulated, “Further up and further in!”

And people still want to insist that Christianity is no more than a religion.

I don’t know about you but in light of this information, it puts Jesus in an entirely different light.
He’s no longer an ideal, or a belief system. He’s a person.
And to put it more precisely, He is a groom in love with his bride.
And not just any bride, but a wayward, adulterous bride.
A bride who is half-hearted at best, chasing other lovers and other interests more than Him.
And still, He keeps on loving. He keeps on being faithful,
He keeps his promises.

In the Old Testament,
He tells his prophet Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman,
to show everyone the way He loves his people. (see Hosea 3)
In the New, He tells us that divorce will never be an option for Him. (Phil 1:6)
Over and over and over again, From Isaiah, to Ezekiel, to Ephesians,
He tells us that we are not just his children, but we are his bride.
Faithless though we might be, we are His, and He is ours.

And like I said before, this changes everything.
It changes the way I view prayer.
It changes the way I view marriage.
It even changes the reasons that I obey.
As Donald Miller once said,
“it’s a far different thing to break a rule, than it is to cheat on a lover.”
I only pray that it changes things for you.

    Hey Mike,

I love how you worded this (:
    entertaining yet profound,

I knew where this was going from the probably the second sentence, but my sister who I was reading to out loud, loved it when she got the connection, It was like a light went On. (btw I got it faster bcause I was actually reading, so no boo on her).

It is so beautiful, when scripture that is often overlooked or uncomprehended is realized for its Stunning connection to Our relationship with God Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This is probably one of my most favorite parallel, because the concept makes the salvation all the more sweet. And as you mentioned, when Hosea took the adulterous wife, he took a woman who deserved death under the LAW.

And it was a type and shadow of Jesus’ relationship with us. Beautiful!!!!

    Thanks for sharing Mike

    Hey brotha Mike,
I’ve been waiting for June’s chapter, and as always you’re something. I’ve been single for such a long time (I’m talking years). I know I’ll meet MY main man, I know Jesus will bring him to me. However, I’ve been playing your song over and over and saying to myself, ( I have my man, and he’s all I need). The lyrics in that song are right-on (just like your other songs). I do though; love the thought of me, “the pining bride bustling out my front door and practically straight down the aisle, and into my beloved’s arms” ( in the natural). “The period of waiting and wanting would be over, and we would be united at last to consummate my long-awaited union. Joy. Happiness”. BUT, until then, I pray for patience, and I’m totally satisfied. And also like you said “it puts Jesus in an entirely different light. He’s no longer an ideal, or a belief system. He’s a person. And to put it more precisely, He is a groom in love with his bride. And not just any bride, (I’m not an adulterous or chasing other lovers), but sometimes I do find myself having “other interests more than Him. And still, He keeps on loving. He keeps on being faithful,
He keeps his promises.” Yea I’m quoting you because you give me the words to do so, I wish you were a pastor up here in Bucks County, PA! Not that I don’t respect my own Pastor…
Thank you Mike, for helping me see Jesus and understand him in so many different ways. When I read my bible or listen to it via CD it’s awesome and I get it, but to also absorb your words is excellent as well.
I always say this in my comments to you, as Jesus would say - “assuredly I say to you” – God is well-pleased with you. (smile)
God bless you Mike and your wife. I bet that baby is growing fast! Take care. Hope to meet you and your excellent buddies at the Rock and Worship show in New York. We have press seat passes!!!
    Take care,
    Laurie

Very profound story. Jesus is blushing at how well that was written. My fiancee Kim and I and some friends from church are coming to see you guys in Millville, we can’t wait. She used to see you guys a lot at Elevate in Clayton, NJ. When we met she introduced me to your music and the great message and I’ve been a fan ever since. I am concerned b/c on your site it says the Millville show is sold out, but in the ads it said open seating as if there weren’t any tix. We’re planning to be there @ 6 even though doors don’t open til 6:30 but we want to get decent seats and hear you guys. I rsvp’d to the event on facebook I hope that was enough for a reservation. I really would like her to see you guys, this was part of her birthday present. Either way could someone email me booking info so that we can see if we can get you guys scheduled at our church sometime? It is located in Malaga, NJ almost exactly between Clayton and Millville. Beloved is a truely sanctified song. From the subtle nuances of the guitar and chord flow to the truely insightful lyrics, I am touched every time I hear it. ( And I have that in my work mix on my mp3 so I hear it a lot.) I hope that you guys can release a karaoke version of Beloved and By your side soon. I’m a trained singer and I would love to sing that to my Godly woman on our wedding day in September since I’m sure you guys would be a little too busy to be there yourselves -but you have an open invite. :) Feel free to contact me whenever you have a moment- gustinodante@hotmail.com Best wishes and God Bless

Thanks for that!!! I was able to see you guys and meet you when you were in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on the rock and worship roadshow tour and I was really encourged by how you guys were so down to earth. I’m also going to be able to see you at Ignite Chicago this summer and I’m really excited about it!!! Thank you for all you do, and I can’t wait till your new cd comes out!!! Elisabeth

Thank you for continuing to share with us what you are learning and writing… I appreciate it sooo much–and I have been appreciating it for years, following your blog on Myspace

I’ve heard bits and pieces of how the whole marriage thing worked in the Jewish culture, but never this complete. You’re right. It changes things. It changes everything. People should know this stuff– it is so central to everything.
    Jesus is amazing.

    Hey Mike,

What a beautiful evidence of God’s grace in your life on display as you proclaim the excellencies of Christ and His sacrificial love for those He came to save, His beloved bride, the Church.

Just as a plain, ordinary, or even an unattractive woman wonders how she ended up with THIS guy, so should we be shaking our head in disbelief that God set His love upon us for no other reason except that He loves us (Deut. 7:6-8).

As you say, this truly does change everything, most especially the way we look at marriage. God designed the covenantal relationship between one man and one woman as a vivid picture of the gospel on display for a dying world to see and it’s just so powerful when couples really get that. Just as Christ would never leave or forsake us, but loves us despite our hang-ups and many inadequacies, so should a husband love his bride. And, just as Jesus joyfully submits to His Father, so should the wife joyfully submit to her husband as he leads her lovingly and lays down his life for her.

Also, I love how the theology breaks down practically. Just as the man is meant to take the lead and pursue the woman, so too has God chased US down with His irresistible grace. I love that. It’s thrilling and romantic!

I pray that God would continue to bless you and Kelly with that kind of marriage, one which is self-sacrificing, unconditionally loving, Christ-exulting, and faithful until the very end. And, may it be used by God to showcase His power, love, and lavish grace in your lives! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

    Forever His,
    Laura

wow, thank you again. =) That puts everything in another way to to understand. I’m a bride! =) cool! And He’s the groom! The best groom I could ever ask for! It all makes perfect sense. Makes me look at it all in a different, more meaningful, way. Makes me feel even closer to him. And the resemblance of the Holy Spirit being the best man, is exactly right. wow, amazing. And even though at times, we may not be the best brides, forgetting all about Him, He still loves us through it all. wow. And to imagine that day. That day, when after all the struggles and hard work is done; when His Father, the almighty God, tells Him to; He’ll come back, to take us home. Home, to the most beautiful mansion ever built. awesome, truly, awesome. The Holy Spirit is defiantly delivering many messages through you. thank you.
I’ll tell my friends = ) God Bless,

The lyrics to “Love is Here”, “By Your Side” and “Beloved”– all of your songs give much insight to your walk with our savior. Praise the Lord for the effectual call on your lives and the work He continues to do in and through you–for His namesake.

I will make you my wife forever, showing you righteousness and justice, unfailing love and compassion. I will be faithful to you and make you mine, and you will finally know me as the Lord. Hosea 2:19-20

hey Mike. thanks a bunch for this posting(: I didn’t really check out the website until today, and i can tell you honestly I wasn’t disappointed. It was awesome and refreshing. I never actually understood the significance of this part of scripture, but now I can see the importance and it really helps us see that Christianity is really a relationship with our Savior, and not some uptight religion. So again, thanks a lot. May God bless you and the band, that you guys will keep writing awesome songs that celebrate our relationship with God. happy fathers day! (:

Mike, I hear you were the main one who wrote, “Times.” If I’m wrong, then this is to whoever did. Thanks! The lyrics to that song describe what I was then. I was bewildered, Where did God go? I desperately wanted him, but didn’t know how to find him or get help. Well, he sent it through “Times, Hold my heart, Love is here, and By your side.” Those songs showed me exactly what I was missing and how to find them. My path is now clear from all debris, junk, and yucky thoughts. I love y’all’s songs. I am sincerely thankful that God used yall as a tool to help me clear my path and allow me to see clearly.

    Hi Mike!
I can’t thank you enough for posting this! You spoke on this topic at a concert you did at FBC Fort Lauderdale some years ago and I think on it often. The book of Hosea and a work of fiction based on Hosea called Redeeming Love changed my life. This information on communion and how Jesus was basically proposing to his disciples is such an encouragement. We are all that prostitute that Jesus continually loves! Thanks for putting pen to paper so that this message can be spread!

WOW! that is really cool. I loved it. I liked the part when you said that we are so unfaithful yet he still loves us so much. This is so true. He told me to stay away from the love of man becaues its gets distracting and i cant focus on him. Its hard but its worth it to know i am not disapointing him. Thankyou so much you have no idea how music has effected my life.

wow. You are extremely annointed, thank you for explaining “beloved.” I’ve heard about us being Jesus’ bride, but I really didnt understand it all too well. It does bring a whole new light, I cant even grasp the love that Jesus has for us. I love getting revelations!< the holy spirit is constantly at work!

That was absolutely amazing. I love how Tenth Avenue North has great music that can inspire me, but the members aso have these profound thoughts that they’re so proud to share with the world. To me, it seems to take so much courage to write down these thoughts so everyone can read them. It would make me very uncomfortable, but you only want to please God and inspire people, and trust me, that’s exactly what you guys are doing:)

    Dear Mike,

I’m sure you’re probably surrounded by people telling you how wonderful and beautiful you and your band’s music is…but I suppose I’ll join the masses and tell you that what you have done has profoundly impacted my life…

After hearing “By your side” on the radio, i literally turned around from going home after a long day at school and went to buy your album…i later lent your cd to one of my agnostic friends and now, though she’s not sure about her beliefs yet, she’s a regular attender at my church with me…

I’ve spent the last 2 hours reading every one of your journal entries and I wanted you to know that you’ve affected so many lives in ways i don’t think you know…that you’ve affected my life in such an amazing way and that I’m so…thankful (which is such an understatement) for what you’ve done…

sorry that message was so long…but i feel like i needed you to know that God is using you in ways i don’t think you know…

    Eternal thanks
    Megan

A dear, new found friend, my ex-wife, pointed me in the direction of your song, By Your Side. I’d been running away from Jesus since I don’t know when. (I lost her because of my running.) Yet, so many wonderful “Jesus People” never gave up and this morning after hearing the Great Singer of Israel singing to me through your songs, His love broke through. Thanks to all of you for your ministry.

I have to say that “Beloved” is my favorite song on your album (…although ALL of them are GREAT…very few CD’s can I listen to all the way through and LOVE all of the songs). Thank you for sharing your insights in this journal entry as it was very profound. I espeically liked the unfolding of the Jewishness of our Messiah. I am a Christian that has really dug into the Jewish root system of our faith and very rarely do you hear people mention these kinds of things these days…THANK YOU! Bless you in all you put your hands to, for His glory!

Wow. It is amazing how something that you know can be described in a way that makes it seem as if you didn’t REALLY know. You seem to have the gift of elocution and elucidation. I know, big words but fitting.
May God bless you and keep you, and may you keep close to Him so that your life may glorify Him.

Hi Mike, This is 1 of your best fans,I just wanted to say how much I love ur music, especially that song,”‘love is here”. It means something to me,and all the rest of the christians out there. Its because of God that ur singing today, he uses you as a messenger to tell people whats going on in this world, and what we need to do to not be part of this world, because us christians,we belong to God,and we can’t let the Devil approach us. You sing so many songs that inspire many people. And thank God 4 that. Well i wish I could meet u in person 1 day, maybe i will. But i promise as long as u keep singing,i’ll be listening 4 what you have to teach me in your songs.Well God bless you and hope 2 see u someday again. Your biggest fan, Keara maria mendez

WOW this is good. This is the best story I’ve ever read! I NEVER thought of it like that.. I mean in church I’ve heard that we are His bride and we’ve talked about it, but not like THIS.
Seriously, this is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing! (:

“Won’t you let me make you my bride. You will drink of my lips and taste new life”

Amazing song, I love that song so much! Get tears in my eyes every time I hear it.

    Thanks again Mike! (:

I have always had a difficulty looking at my relationship with Jesus as a lover/groom. He was always a Father or a Teacher. However, this entry touched me and has expanded my way of looking at this subject.

Mike- My communication professor in college once said that genius is what comes from “grasping great connections.” In that case, I’d have to say that this is a bit of genius.

It’s obvious that this message about Jesus being more than just a theory is exactly what people are desperate to hear. The sheer amount of comments on this one blog speaks volumes. You’ve give me a reason to look at my sin, not as a disobedient child that needs to be disciplined, but more like an adulterous wife. It stings just to say that. But the visual imagery is what moves my passions and my will to wait for Jesus’ return, to be dressed in white and waiting.

p.s. have you heard of Francine River’s Redeeming Love? I guess you could say it’s kind of a “girls book” but it plays out the story of Hosea had it taken place around the 18th century. I couldn’t put it down, and I was crying like a baby by the end of it! But I guess it spoke to me especially because the prostitutes name wasn’t Gomer, but her real name was Sarah.

    Hey,
I like to read these every once in awhile. It helps my spiritual walk!
I knew almost everything about how Jewish Mariages happen, and how Jesus said, “take and drink for this is my blood, and eat for this is my body”, but Iv’e never matched them up together. I love when something I had thought I knew about turns out it can have other meanings to it! Gods soooo fascinating in how he works. Now every time im taking Communion I’ll think of what you said. Thanks!

By the way, I love your lyrics soooo much! I wish God could give me words for a song like you guys have written.

When you played at the Louisville Bats game tonight, at the end you said that God said divorce is not an option for him and it left me a little confused, I didn’t understand why you would say this, but after reading this chapter I now understand how it fits in with everything else you talked about tonight.
I never knew that that was what communion actually was.
I really enjoy these devotions and can’t wait for the next one!

I JUST HEARD YOU GUYS ON KLOVE AND YOU MENTIONED YOUR JOURNAL -FIRST BOOK WRITTING EFFORTS- ANYWAY WENT STRAIGHT TO WEB SITE TO READ IT. WHOA….. I’M STILL SITTING HERE TRYING TO SOAK IT ALL IN. YOU KNOW IT’S ONE THING TO READ THE BIBLE AND BELIEVE THAT WHAT IS WRITTEN IS TRUTH BECAUSE OF THE FAIT WE HAVE… BUT WOW… TO HAVE SOME HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF HOW THINGS WORKED “BACK IN THE DAY” RELATED TO WHAT WAS BREATHED ONTO THE PAGES OF THE WORD WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! IT WAS AN AWESOME ” OOO I GET IT” MOMENT FOR ME; AND NOT ONLY DID THOSE SCRIPTURES JUST JUMP FROM THE PAGES INTO “REAL LIFE” AND MAKE COMPLETE SENSE, BUT “BELOVED” EARNED A DEEPER PLACE IN MY HEART. I AM COMPLETLEY BLOWN AWAY BY THE SIMPLENESS OF THE WORD OF GOD BECOMING CONCRETE IN THEIR MEANING, INSTEAD OF SOMETHING SOMEWHAT “OUT THERE’ AND FULL OF QUESTIONS AND CONFUSION, BEING REVEALED TO ME BY A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON. THANK YOU!!!! CAN’T WAIT TO READ THE NEXT ONE. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO USE YOUR MANY TALENTS FOR HIM.

    Dear Mike,
Thank you. Seriously, thank you for listening to the Lord. God has blessed you with so much talent; speaking His Word, singing, you know? God has made us all for a purpose, and we need to minister it to one another (1 Peter 4:10)And you have been doing just that. But remember, don’t let being famous to people make you stray from the Lord or anything. Trust in the Lord forevermore. Anyways, the way you worded this, it really touched my heart. It gave me a better insight to the song, but not only the song, but life. Life is hard without Him, and I couldn’t do it. But I appreciate your frankness, it helps me to understand better. I do have a better understandment and it has changed my way of thinking, He’s not just a Being, He’s Someone. A Someone i really love. Thank you for the song and explaining it. But most of all, thank the Lord!

    Mike,
thx so much for posting that it was awsome. i had a question about it though. i’m not a guy so i wouldn’t kno this, but is it a sorta weird thing for guys. i mean the whole bride of christ thing? for girls it makes sense cause we understand the comparison more and its somethin we can relate to, but is it weird for you guys to be compared to a bride of christ.

Profound. Just profound. Was at Louisville Slugger Field, front and center. You guys were phenomenal. But your carefully crafted and placed devotional remarks, musings & observations about God vs. theology, Jesus vs. religion and living because of God were every bit as good. Most insightful.

Thank you for that perspective. I am engaged to a wonderful man of God but I sometimes forget that I have already become one with Christ. In the hustle bustle of planning a wedding this definitely helped me to see what I am truly saying when I finally get to say “I do.”

Also, have you red “Sex God” by Rob Bell because your thoughts and his definitely parallel. I recommend it if you have not. Keep up the good work and great music- you are being used for things bigger than we can imagine.

this answered your prayer. it did change things for me-this entry as well as your song beloved. it revealed to me a side of Christ i know very little of. and it shed light on my sinful heart that is being unfaithful for i am guilty of ‘chasing lovers that wont satisfy.’ this man laid down His life for me-the ultimate and most powerful gift of love i will ever receive. so thank you allowing the Lord to speak through you in this journal as well as your songs.
your band has truly had a huge impact on my life and i praise God for you all. keep up the Lord’s good work.

p.s. i had an amazing time at ignite chicago. the Lord showed up. it was so nice to finally meet you. and i cant WAIT to sing again with you at the throne of our Father!

Your expression of God’s unfailing love is a great reminder that God will never divorce us! And your words at your recent concert in Monroe and your songs send us that message. However, unfortunate as it is, divorce is a harsh reality. Though God hates divorce, keep in mind that though divorce is always a result of some sin, it is not a sin in itself. When you introduced your song “Beloved” it could have given one the impression that divorce is never an option. I would encourage you to remember that there just might be divorced people in the audience - some divorced because of their sin or some because of sin done against them. And they too are loved by God. You are ministering to more than teens and I trust that God will give you the right words to minister to not only those who need a beautiful picture of marriage, but also to those who have survived the traumas of divorce - without judgment and full of God’s grace.

Dear Mike and Tenth Avenue North,
I am a new fan, a very new fan. I was introduced to you through KLOV when they played By Your Side sometime ago. I always loved every time KLOV played that song, and “for some reason” I placed it as the ringback tone for my phone even though my heart was set on getting anything from Tomlin.
I hadn’t bought a cd in a long time and “for some reason” this past Wednesday I hopped in my car and jetted off to a local Family Christian Store to splurge on 5cd’s, your Over and Underneath album being one of them. I admit, it was the last one I picked up, and I only snatched it because it was lonely on the sale rack. It may have been the last album I picked up that day, but I assure you, it will be the last I put down!
So this summer has been a stress loaded summer with dozens of reasons to complain. On the job I was washing windows in a school my company, ServiceMaster, was cleaning. My back was aching after the 6th consecutive 60 hour week, my fingers were blistering from constant rubbing on the squeegee, and my mind was clouded with frustration. That’s when I glanced over your album on my MP3. Out of sheer curiosity, and eagerness to hear “Love is Here”, I clicked play. As the album rolled methodically from one song to the next, I found myself listening ever more intently to the lyrics. I remember thinking aloud, “I am blown away by the spiritual depth of this band!” I thumbed through the pages of my mind, trying to recall another group that I was as impressed with upon a first hearing of an entire album and I couldn’t think of one. Granted, I love Jars of Clay, Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and many others, but even they didn’t quite capture my heart like your music did initially. I was impressed. I was very impressed, and thanking God the whole time. Eventually track 8 reached my ears, and I had no idea the name of the song at the time. I only remember being suddenly overcome with emotion. My knees trembled, and immediately tears started pouring off my face. I must have scared the living day lights out of my coworkers. All of a sudden, a grown boy stops window cleaning to prop his sobbing body against a counter and smiles with maddening joy!
I had to stop. I was compelled. The Spirit was breathing the words of this song all over my body and I couldn’t do anything but stand in His presence and be showered by love. How many times had I told other’s the truth of Jesus? How many times had I taught kids about His death for them? “How many times?” I asked myself, “did I teach me?” Jesus’ indeed loved me so desperately, He would die for me! He did died for me! Sometimes we just need a refreshment of that endless compassion of our God, and He refreshed me through you just days ago. Thank you!
I decided to comment on the note because I love this analogy and it inspires deeper commitment to Jesus our groom. As a guy, it was awkward to be thinking about being a bride, but wow, Christ’s bride is the immaculate bride to be, huh! I took liberty to read your album regards, and I wanted to let you know I am overjoyed to see your desire be that this album allows the listener to encounter Christ. I want you to know that Jesus answered your prayer in me, if only one. I encountered my Lord anew, and I am in debt to your service of our King.
I don’t like to encourage anyone to buy something, it seems shallow and melds right into our culture, easily discarded from our minds, like a mini requirement on everything given good marks. The tag line of “you should buy it!” really irritates me. Tenth Avenue North, I know my God will supply your every need. When people buy your records that supports you, so I encourage support, and I encourage listening. Listen with your heart to these songs, and the Jesus who wrote them (through Tenth Avenue), will meet you in them.
Blessings on your ministry and headline tour! Always continue in the grace of our King and Groom, Jesus!

    ~a servant of the King

Wow thanks so much for posting this it really does give you a whole other perspective on the story we all know so well :) You came to our getaway in Colorado and played for us every day and the thing that really got me was when you said that we can break God’s heart with the things we do, and that we shouldn’t do things just because it’s the christian thing to do but because what we do affects God! That’s so amazing to think about! God loves us so infinitely much :D
Thanks for coming to the getaway again we were so blessed to have you!
    Much Love, Lauren

Wow. Mike, that was amazing. How old are you? That’s just some beautiful revelation coming from sucha young man!! But it doesn’t surprise me. i just want you to know that your music has done amazing things for me. i am a ladies life group leader in my church and I was just sharing with them how the Holy Spirit with a little help from you, helped me out in the dead of night a couple of days ago. I was going thru a rough time, and i couldn’t sleep, i was crying my heart out, and having a major pity party because my husband never seemed to love me enough, blah blah blah, and my mp3 just kicks on and there you were singing “By your side”. i can’t tell you what it did for me. It had me on the floor on my face crying out to the one who does know how to love me, and the one that matters. And it just gave me so much strength to handle things differently now. So, I just wanted you to know, that your music really touches people in a very real way. I am also a singer on our worship team and a voice teacher and a former elementary music teacher, who grew up singing gospel/bluegrass with my fammily since i was a little girl, so I appreciate good music, especially if it’s annointed like that. May God bless you all. I’m glad I looked you up, and found your little story here, it was great!! i’ll look forward to more. oh and by the way I had posted those lyrics on facebook that next morning, and you’ll be glad to know you have a lot of fans out there that simply recognized that second verse!!

God has deposited a part of himself in you. You were created to excel. There’s no limit to how high you can go in life. You have been given treasures and gifts to share with those who are poor in spirit. You are creative, talented and valuable. Keep your eyes fixed on where you are going. There will be no limit on how far you will go with your amazing spirit, gifts and talents. God will lift those who haven’t been given the opportunity to know of the greatness of the Lord and his blessings that are given to all. For they will truly hear and see with their heart and know for themselves of the pure love of our Beloved Jesus Christ our Savior.
This is truly your destiny. Young and full of life so much to give so much to share. God is building you upon his rock.(him) “Those who hear let them hear and I will build him up to a wise man who built his house upon a rock. And when the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house: it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.”
“Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you feast upon the words of Christ: for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.”
A man’s gift maketh room for him and bringeth him before great men. Proverb18:16
You have an opportunity to unite people from different religions to hear your music and lift spirits of the poor and lost. Being of one body full of love for Christ praising his name with psalm a spiritual prayer. Please continue in the greatness of the will of God and he will walk with you and make your way well with him forever.
The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Zephaniah 3:17
I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me. Phillippian 4:13
There are many ways we can be strong in our faith. All gifts and talents that are given from God are to be shared for everyone’s benefit’’ As a painter shares his magnificent painting of our beloved Jesus or a writer writes the words of God in his book , or a poetic poem or psalm the voice of song or dance are created to uplift us in tragedy or lonesomeness. To lift our spirits to help us know that we are not alone in this world we have God and we have each other.
And again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the agifts of God, for they are many; and they come from the same God. And there are different ways that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all; and they are given by the manifestations of the Spirit of God unto men, to profit them.
I thank God for blessing you with his words. I feel that my life has been touched and forever changed by you sharing your gifts. I too was lost in spirit I felt as if I had a hole in the pit of my stomach and no matter what I had been blessed with I couldn’t fill it. I prayed for God to help me. My prayers were answered. Through the living scriptures I would find my understanding of a world I never allowed myself to know until most recently in my life. It has taken me many years to get to this understanding that God has never left my side he has always been there. It was I who lost my signal.
One day I got into my car and my husband had left the station tuned to K-love for his xm radio signal. It was if God adjusted the signal for me and I finally understood that I was loved by God and I was not alone. I was not walking this journey of life alone. And I had a sense of relief. The only problem was I could only listen to K-love in the car. My house signal is horrible. So I could only listen to K-love when I was out driving. I remember when I first heard Gods song by your side I wept every time I heard it. And for some reason it would come on when I really needed to hear it. There were many wonderful songs on K-love but the one song that touched my life the most was by your side. I decided I wanted to hear it more than my opportunity of just driving. So I purchased the CD and every single one of your songs spoke to me and brought peace to me. Beloved is such an amazing song wow intensely powerful and beautiful. As I listened to your songs I was captivated by the spirit that expelled from your music. God is taking you by the hand and blessing you and those who are being touched by your gifts. I assure you that God is using you as a powerful tool to reach out to the poor in spirit. Keep yourselves alive in Christ always. He is your light in the darkness. With him in your midst you shall always be blessed.

Thank you and please continue in your mission

Thank you for writing this down.
I heard you share this at a venue in Charleston, SC and it really really changed my heart.

So thank you for recording this, it has encouraged me all over again and it will continue to encourage me.

That was cool! It made me smile when you explained to the girls what a mansion really was to the Jews. I’m at least five months new to all of this so I’m getting eager on reading more about Jesus and his disciples and the way you explained things really helped me to understand better of what Jesus was saying to his disciples at the Last Supper if I’m not mistaken :]. There’s a saying in Ozark Christian College I heard from them during our camp at Mt. Zion in Texas “Just one can make a big difference” and your band members individually and all put together are making a big difference in everyones life helping them to realize things that were/are right in front of them all along. You guys are amazing and sorry for the long tedious message praying for you guys always.

I’m 13, and something such as a blog, can help me feel God’s presence!

the ove of God is ever present and i dont need to loo for it but know that i have it.. one of the break through moments in my faith..

th way you speak about God, being a frst generation christian in my family, it is something that i dont hear and it is really inspiring..

i hope you can know that these are more than words on a page, but i tuly mean to thank you for eveything you have helped me to learn about God through your posts and music.

you have brought me so much closer to the love of Jesus. which is something i cannot put into words.

    I remember this.
    At DiscipleNow.

You told us the first part at the concert.

That was the single most profound thing I’d heard that weekend.

In school; apx 200 kids retelling this. a month later, they’re still telling this to anyone willing to listen.

None of us (not even the leaders) had heard it put that way.

I just spent 2 hours reading the “book”.
I’ve learned more in 2 hours than I have in 10 years (other than the basic VBS type stuff)

I look forward to reading the rest of it.
Especially “Satisfy”. A few years ago I got into some stuff I didn’t need to be into. After DNow, I decided that after 2 years of constant battle, I was done with it. for good. and that song was my theme dong.

Anyways, this “book”, has been the most profound stuff I’ve read. ever.

God is using you and the band in great ways.

    this blog was confirmation.

A friend asked me what “love the lord w/ all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, all your strength” means, really. I was talking about it with my family (all wedded to christ :) and we finally came around to it’s like falling in love w/ god. Like how when you fall in love with someone, you think about them all the time, can’t wait to be with them again, find out what they like so u can buy little presents and do things for them, how you just give yourself away to them.

That was last night. Today i read this blog. God is very very good to me, and clearly loves me very, very much. I dont deserve it, but i gladly accept his gift.

c u in Tabernacle, NJ tonight!

    Hey mike,
i don’t know if you’ll see this or not but i really want to say thank you for the awesome concert in Line Lexington. i went with the “i will not cry” additude and guess what, i ended up crying. what you said made so much sense, and especially during “Beloved” was when the waterworks hit. thank you. you made the most serious point really funny. i liked what u said about how we each have a canyon in our hearts that we try to fill with pebbles but the one thing that can only satisfy us is God. i just really wanted to say it helped me amazingly. thank you! and if u guys are really nice, maybe I’ll see you next year!
    God bless, love,

Man, it’s the most intricate yet simple love story. My favorite part about this is the proposal, the fact that the action of taking a drink of the cup signifies the acceptance, not words. It’s so beautiful, so genius. We can’t just say we accept Christ, we have to show it with our life. Drinking from his cup means yes Jesus I will do whatever it takes to stay by your side, to be your faithful bride and I accept the suffering that comes along with that.

That same “cup” that Jesus held in front of the disciples, he later cried out that God would take from him. And when God didnt, Jesus still held on. When we fall away and are a wayward adulturous wife, there is still hope because Jesus won the battle. When we cry out God take this from me, Jesus understands, he gets it. He’s like been there won that, I gotch you now lean on me because my love never fails.
ahhhhhh Jesus is the best!! thanks for sharing this mike!!!!!

There were a lot of great points in this post, but it leaves me wondering how much more powerful it could have been if the style of writing were not so informal and breezy. It seems to imply that yes, Christ has done all these great things for us, but he still is not important enough for us to speak of in a holy manner. What he has done is merely good enough to be talked about in the most common way–the language that the lowest echelons of humanity use. I know that Jesus came to save sinners–he associated with the lowest of the low when he came to earth–but that does not mean that we are to make ourselves sound like the unsaved people around us. Your words would perhaps have more impact if they were couched in slightly different terms–terms that didn’t sound as if they were straight from the bars and brothels of this world.

PRAISE THE LORD FOR HIS AMAZING LOVE! As a senior in college and one who has never dated, it is so easy to become scared of what the future holds. Most of my college friends are getting married or at least dating, and it is easy for me to become discontented with where the Lord has for me (especially at a conservative Bible college where every girl is “supposed to be married by graduation” :P). Last year, I was studying Ephesians for my devos, and the Lord really hit me with this truth: HE IS MY GROOM, AND I AM HIS IMMACULATE BRIDE! Since this realization, the Lord has taught me that He is all I need. I can be content with being “discontent” because He loves me, and I love Him. As the old song says, “You can have ALL this world, but give me JESUS!” Your song is a constant reminder to me that I am the beloved of Christ, and He is all that matters. No matter what life brings, whether it be nakedness, peril, tribulation, and even death (for me or those I love), I know that my life is worthwhile with the loving arms of Christ holding me fast. Thank you for your amazing testimony for the Lord. It is such a blessing to know that you truly have a heart for God, and it’s not all just a show!

    August 20th, 2009 at 9:14 am

Thank you so much for writing this post, Mike. This puts many things into perspective for me; it shows that Jesus really does love us and wants a full commitment with us. So, when we take communion every Sunday we are saying yes to His proposal! I always think to myself, how could He, the giver of life, one and only God, truly love me??? Why would He chose me? I am not even in the same category as perfect: far from it. But to know that he will constantly propose his love for us no matter what we do is a reason to sing with joy!
Sometimes I wonder if God is really listening to what we are saying in our prayers, but I know that a true lover always listens to anything that we say. God Is the true lover, he is what any human being that has ever looked for a true love wants. He is what I desire and need as well. He must hear me when I speak to him…even if I cannot hear him. Instead of asking God to listen to me and answer me (I already know that he is doing that) I will now ask him that he tunes my ears to his voice so that I will no longer doubt that he hears me.
Ever since a few tragedies in the last year I have put God in an entirely new light. I no longer think that he put us here and just stepped away as we destroy the life that he wished us to have. No, he is constantly helping and yearning us to return to him and when we do, he sings with joy and thanksgiving and holds us tight. I no longer think of prayer as a mere incantation of somesort but that I am truly having a conversation with God. The holy spirit is truly working through us whenever we finally begin to realize these things. I hope that I will continue to learn more about my Lord, my God. Thank you again for writing this and for writing many songs that touch my heart as well as those around me.
    God bless

Hello! I just read your blog and I have never thought of that particular story in that way. What a way to view the Lord’s supper. Jesus is so personal and loving! When you made the comment about how many people think that Christianity is just a religion, it reminded me of how much I do here that comment. I have a friend who is searching so much and he says that a lot of times, and so I tell him that no it is not a religion it’s a relationship! He is our lover and the only reasons why God made the commandments is because He loves us!
Thank you for your blog. I can see your heart is with Jesus! That’s grrrreat! Ha! Well, I hope you and your band keep playing music that is honest, from your hearts, and in Jesus! This is huge and I know has to be diffult many times because the flesh and the devil are sly. But Jesus is smarter, better, and pretty much the bomb!! Woop Woop!

    Hello Mike,

1st time visitor to your guy’s website. I guess I just wanted to check out if the hype was true about you all. Well as I read your journal entry I found myself convicted and joyous, convicted why? Because I am totally aware of my depravity and yet joyous because the presence of conviction confirms that God is there continuing to love, even in someone like me.

Fame has reached you, and that is a blessing and a curse, you from appearance seem to have the Lord helping you to reinforce your convictions. Just remain faithful my brother…all of you! Don’t be swayed by the illusions of fame, keep giving all you got to the risen King He’s worthy of it. With all that said, thanks for the post, thanks for the music. I”ll be praying for you guys to remain preaching Christ and Him crucified…your Resurrected KING!

    Heyy Mike,
I have 2 questions (and one comment) that I’ve been meaning to ask for a while but, yet again, kept forgeting to.

1: Do you plan on having this published once your done? If not I would highly recommend it because you make so many great points in each and every chapter and I think a lot of people would enjoy it.

2: Do you plan on doing this for your next album. Once again, I would highly recommend it.

The word that comes to mind when I read these, and when I get the pleasure of hearing you speak is “philosophical”. For a guy with a personality like yours, one wouldn’t automatically think that you could speak so….eloquently. Whoever was your english teacher in high school deserves a high five, or a handshake, or something!

You are so totally right. I have believed this for some time now…as have others from down the centuries…way past–before us. it’s been there all thru the ages in God’s Word, sort of a cryptic message, ifyou will.

This is such a profound truth that so many Christians fail to realize. I discovered this same truth through Theology of the Body. It has completely changed my life. It’s like I fell in love with my Lord all over again. I pray that more people will hear the truth and be filled with the love that is God. I pray that, through your music ministry, God will show others his love!

    Thanks for sharing this Mike!

    Your sister in Christ,

I was at your show in San Antonio on Sept. 12, and found out earlier that day that my boyfriend of 2 years was leaving me for a girl he’d known for 3 weeks.

I was devestated, to say the least. But the words of your song, “Beloved” are slowly but surely helping me through this. I finally realize what has been in front of me all this time. I’m done chasing “lovers that won’t satisfy”. I’m falling in love with Jesus in a whole new way, & I don’t think I would’ve come by this path if it hadn’t been for your music.

    Thank you, God Bless ya’ll.
You’ll be in my prayers <

Wow, once more one of your blogs has shown me something I already knew but had forgotten and had stripped of its merit. You, sir, have been blessed with the ability to write and put things in perspective. In the most awe-inspiring, beautiful perspective. I just wanted to let you know how much God, through you, has drawn me ever closer. I know you hear this all the time, but God drastically used this song to break in to my heart and take it captive. When I first bought your CD, I found myself singing along with every song before I even looked at the lyrics (I’d only heard “By Your Side” & “Love Is Here” on the radio before this point). It was amazing. Anyway, in the way God likes to do, He beautifully orchestrated a couple of things happening at once. I was reading “Captivating” and I was just finishing the chapter on wounds. It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself in an hour. After searching my heart and my past, I realized my two greatest hurts were unresolved. The first was that I had somewhat recently discovered that my fondest childhood memories of my father were of me falling asleep on his lap as he passed out drunk after a playing gig. The second was even more recent. My mom had always told me I could come to her with anything. No matter what it was she wanted to talk about it. Ya know, help me through life. Well, I had been struggling with sexual immorality and I came to her in tears, broken over having been unfaithful to God. She held me and we talked and it took all the strength I had for me to tell her what I’d done. Awesome, precious moment, right? Well, yeah, until the conversation was over and she told me never to talk to her about it again. As I realized these things I was nearly in tears. I had no idea what to do, so I grabbed my Zune and just decided to listen to whatever I had left it on. Well, guess what song started playing? “Beloved”. Through that song, in that moment, God said, “You have nothing to worry about. Just rest and I will hold you. I know your parents have failed you, but I never will. You’re my Beloved, Lover, I’m yours.” I just laid there in the dark, with the song on repeat and cried.

Mike—-I don’t think you’ll ever read this; you have just soooo much reviews to sort thru!!! But if you ever get around to reading this…send me an e-mail. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you are AWESOME and that your wife has a very godly husband and also that God has gifted your band TREMENDOUSLY. You can be confident that Eisley will grow up in the LORD, and that her understanding of God, truth, marriage, love, and fathers will not be distorted if you continue to allow God’s truth into you as you have here. Your band is amazing and I feel so blessed to have you guys in my life thru your music. And I, the wayward, adulterous wife of Christ, has been encouraged to get back up continue fighting because of this blog; this band; this song. Anyway, I’m typing too much. You rock and may God bless you forever and ever!!!! -Emily PS: Look up Isaiah 28:29…it’s GOOD!!!

randomly came upon this blog and am so thankful.

I have so much to say about this subject of a wedding feast and Jesus as the bridegroom, but will only say a bit. I hope you find this interesting.

THis has more to do with Jesus as the Bread of Life, but here is an interesting fact about bread from back in the old Roman days. When eating a meal instead of using cloth napkins, people used uncooked bread dough to wipe their face and mouth. After the meal the people cooked the bread and ate their bread-napkins. How crazy but so relatable to who Jesus is apart of this wedding feast.

    That’s it, I suppose.
    Thank you for your music.

Mike

How does one love God?
Well, John says, "we love because He first loved us."
And if that's true, then my whole approach must change.
No longer am I condemning myself in the mirror,
saying, "come on Mike, get your act together."
No. Instead I simply incline my gaze to the cross.
If I'm not loving God, it's because I'm not believing I'm loved.
And how do I know that I am loved?
"This is how we know what love is, Jesus Christ laid down his life..."
